Nancy Pelosi Accuses Facebook of Spreading Misinformation

There is no denying in the fact that social media has truly transformed our lives. The world has now been converted into a global village and people have been brought closer through knowledge of common interests and spreading awareness. However, everything comes with its own list of pros and cons and so does social media. Recently the US elections were held and Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives accused social media sites like Facebook of spreading misinformation during the US election.

During the weekly press briefing at Washington, while replying to a question whether Facebook and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg have too much power, Pelosi accused the company of ‘schmoozing’ the US President Donald Trump’s administration out of antitrust action.

Pelosi also commented that all the company wants is their tax cuts with no antitrust campaign against them. She also said that the social media giant misleads the people ‘with money from God knows where’. While calling out monetary issues, Pelosi added that Facebook did not even check on the money from Russia in the previous Presidential Election in the US. The Congress speaker slammed Facebook further by calling it shameful.

Pelosi shared her opinion of Facebook as a business company whose only objective is to make money without considering its tremendous impact on youth and children or truth.

In protest of uncensorship of political ads and misleading information, many celebrities have left the platforms. However Facebook still declines to censor its ads as it believes it is a platform to share everyone’s perspective. Due to this rising controversy about inappropriate political ads earlier, Twitter and Instagram had put a ban on it. Social media has a tremendous impact on the youth who in turn play a very crucial role in framing the future of the nation. However, misleading information and wrong choices may often create a negative impact on the future and growth of the nation. Hence it is always important to make sure that the information given on social media is accurate and true.
